About the Challenge –

In the last 10 years, digital cameras and mobile photography has revolutionised the environment surrounding image-making. Citizens around the world are now able to share a story worth a thousand words in digital files that are less than a thousand megabytes. This digital revolution around the globe continues to evolve to create new standards and explore new horizons for discovery of ideas, interventions, innovations, find acts of kindness to become powerful messages for change, and give voice to issues and individuals that often remain unspoken.

It is in this regard, that NIUA in partnership with Global Disability Innovation Hub GDI Hub would like to propose a global photography challenge – “The BASIIC Global Photo Contest” – An eye for inclusivity. The challenge was launched on 3rd December 2020, on the annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The challenge will provide an opportunity for photographers and photo enthusiasts around the world to capture and to enrich the image-making culture for professionals and amateurs alike with emphasis on real life solutions that have positively impacted the lives of PwDs by promoting inclusivity in some form or the other.

Aim –

The aim of the “The BASIIC Global Photo Contest” – An eye for inclusivity is to engage a global community of citizens who have an eye for identifying inclusive solutions, are cognizant of the needs of the PwDs, and actively seek means that augment their quality of life. In an effort to do so, the contest seeks to influence policy makers, practitioners, solution providers, and citizens through the common language of photography, irrespective of age or level of photographic experience.

Vision –

“The BASIIC Global Photo Contest” – An eye for inclusivity aims to call upon an aspirational community of photographers and enthusiasts who wish to share stories and best practices from everyday life and stimulate the way people think on the dimension of inclusivity through the lenses of universal access, technologies, and unique interventions and share them through images.

Expected Outcome –

The contest envisages to build a forum where citizens who are passionate for the cause and photography can gather to share their stories and skills through the contest, celebrate the life changing solutions for PwDs, share powerful narratives, and help make photography a vital part of the change towards a more inclusive and responsive cities.
