Historic Districts for All - India, a social and human approach for sustainable revitalisation (Manual for City Professionals)

The UNESCO/UN-HABITAT Toolkit Historic Districts for All - India: A Social and Human Approach for Sustainable Revitalization, comprising of a Manual for City Professionals and a Brochure for Local Authorities has been developed with a view to reflect India’s complex and fast changing urban scenario, the structure of local governance, the decision-making chain and the urban reform currently underway through the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The Toolkit will help to sensitize local authorities and other local actors (governmental and non-governmental) on the need to balance and harmonize economic and social needs with the original urban design without compromising the identity and authenticity of the historical fabric. It will also be informative on how to simultaneously protect and sustain these historical environments as a living part of the whole city through responsive urban renewal and revitalization policies, strategies and programmes.
