Jaipur, Rajasthan

Developed as a planned city in 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amer after whom the city is named. The city is planned in a grid iron layout based on the principles of Vastu shastra and Shilpa shastra. Known as the 'Pink City', Jaipur is the second most visited city in India by international tourists. The city hosts two UNESCO world heritage sites- Jantar Mantar and Amer Fort. Jaipur's economy is fuelled by tourism, gemstone cutting, jewellery manufacture, luxury textiles, and in recent years - information technology. The city in recent times has engaged in urban infrastructure investments and enabling policies such as waste-to-energy compost projects, bus rapid transit system, metro, personal rapid transit, e-rickshaws, Floor Area Ration (FAR) policy for green buildings, solar energy policy etc. In recent years the crime has increased to 780.6 per lakh population, over twice the national average of 346 per lakh population. This is a major deterrent for the tourists.
