The urban population of India as per 2011 census was around 400 million. This is projected to grow to 600 million by 2030, comprising 40 percent of the country’s population. Creation of livable, sustainable, equitable and inclusive smart cities is a big challenge facing the country. But this is also a great opportunity as around 75 percent of India’s GDP comes from its urban areas - hence well-planned urbanization could be the single largest positive determinant of our country’s development in the future.
