Dr. Manvendra Deswal, currently the Head of Smart City Mission (SCM), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is an urban strategist who works closely with all stakeholders on various urban initiatives in the country. He has been with CII for more than 6 years. Smart City Mission is an ambitious scheme by Government of India that aims to develop 100 Smart Cities in India. CII is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed organization, playing a proactive role in India's development process. It works to create and sustain an environment conducive to the development of India, partnering industry, Government, and civil society, through advisory and consultative processes. Dr. Deswal was awarded his PhD from the prestigious Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), University of Delhi in the area of Economics, with the topic being, “Impact of FDI on Structure & Productivity of Indian Automobile Industry”, publications from which were well appreciated in academia & industry. He also holds Masters in International Business (MIB) from Delhi School of Economics. Another key area of responsibility with him in CII is the proposed new Land Acquisition Act in India that aims to replace the archaic Act of 1894, besides stimulating Public Private Partnership (PPP) in Infrastructure. He is credited with coming up with numerous policy papers on these areas which have been submitted to the Indian Government on frequent intervals. He is currently in the process of coming up with a framework for setting up a dedicated Center for Excellence on Smart Cities in the country.
