City’s Vision

Warangal aims to create neighbourhoods with safety and vibrant activities for young children and caregivers, especially vulnerable groups. They plan to do it by developing conducive design interventions and engaging with communities and civil societies.

About the Neighbourhood

The neighbourhood is comprised of Wards 37 and 18. Balsamudram and Massaiah Nagar have higher concentrations of 0-5 population and consists of many markets and open spaces frequented by young children and their caregivers. The neighbourhood is ideal for young children friendly interventions as it has strategic proximity to existing facilities catering to young children. Presence of vulnerable population motivates to create inclusive and equitable environment.

Pilot 1 - Playful anganwadi for young children at Balasamudram
Description

The anganwadi is located in a busy area in proximity to a slum settlement and faced issues such as water-logging. The city improved access to the facility by covering open drains and speed calming measures. 320 sq.m. of toddler friendly play spaces were enhanced inside the anganwadi including shaded seating and assembly area. Murals, plantation and play opportunities on the street were also added. This emphasized the importance of the anganwadi as a community public space.

The project created child friendly spaces along the road with demarcated footpath, cycling track connecting the children's park and added play pockets and shaded seating.

Description

The access to the park was improved by introducing speed calming measures (Chicanes) and providing dedicated parking spots. To make the park more welcoming, the entrance was refurbished with playful elements and platers.

Pilot 4 - Junction improvement for safe access to schools at Balasamudram

Description

The street connects to schools, anganwadis, open spaces of the neighbourhood. The key junction of the street was redesigned with safer crossings, a pedestrian plaza with play opportunities and waiting spaces with seating for caregivers. This encourages safer pedestrian conditions for around 4000 users accessing various activity centres for children and caregivers in the neighbourhood.

Pilot 5 - Dump yard to pet-friendly park

Description

The city ideated a pet-friendly park, which will attract children and all age groups. A dumpyard was transformed into a Pets’ park of around 3000 sq.m., with pets’ play area, gym facility for all ages, shaded seating, flower garden and a lotus pond. connectivity to the park was also improved by creating footpaths and signages through tactical interventions. This has enhanced opportunity for children and everyone to interact with nature.
