City’s Vision
To improve the quality of life of infants, toddlers, and their caregivers, Coimbatore aims to develop safe access to public spaces and vibrant urban environment through inclusive, complete streets that emphasize non-motorized transport and public participatory approach.
The neighbourhood of RS Puram has high concentrations of young children and caregiver population, making it an ideal neighbourhood to plan interventions. The neighbourhood presents many opportunities as it contains markets and public spaces that are frequented by young children and their caregivers and need attention. The strategic location, being in proximity to early childhood development services and public places, facilitates planning effective interventions. The neighbourhood also houses vulnerable population, and needs immediate attention to design and plan more inclusive and responsive environment.
Construction of the amphitheater and sensory park for children at the lakefront is in progress. The design incorporates elements friendly to Infants, Toddlers & Caregivers (ITCs). The city is also discussing the procurement of appropriate play equipment with the site contractors and vendors, while checking their feasibility for customizing this space for young children.
Design Competition
Congratulations to the winners of ‘Toddler’s walk to the park’ design competition. We were very glad to see many interesting proposals from the participants. Through strategic evaluation, we had shortlisted 10 entries, which would be intimated through mails. All the shortlisted entries will be showcased on a public event at the Kumaraswamy lakefront from October 1 to October 3rd . Winners will be announced, and prizes will be distributed at the event. We welcome you all to be part of the event ‘Toddler’s walk to the park’.
